Bedside Tables

Bedside tables are alo called as nightstand! Do you know before indoor flushing toilets became commonplace, the main function of a nightstand was to contain a chamber pot? Another term sometimes given to such cabinets or bedside tables was commode.

A nightstand, alternatively night table, bedside table, daystand or bedside cabinet, used to be a small table or cabinet designed to stand beside a bed or elsewhere in a bedroom.

However, modern nightstands are now usually small bedside tables, often with one or sometimes more drawers and/or shelves and less commonly with a small door. They are often used to support items that might be useful during the night, such as a table lamp, alarm clock, reading matter, phone, eyeglasses, desktop intercom, a drink, or medication.
As a result, we designed new style besdside tables similar in look as early nightstands were but often small cabinets, sometimes not just fitted with a drawer, but containing an enclosed storage space below covered by one or more doors.

French, Italian and Spanish antique beside tables / nightstands usually have one drawer and an enclosed storage space with one door. They can be embellished with gold leaf finish, bronze or parquetry inlaid.

So when talk about bedside tables styles, what should reallt be it?

To answer it,  firstly understanding the main use of bedside tables is to provide good space for small storage such as reading lamps, books and spectacles with smooth surfaces sorunded by electric plug.

Now if think about a style to go for, mainly decision is driven by the size and shape of the bedroom and where beside tables needs to fit. For those who have plenty of space in bedroom, a large size of bedside table will be a right choice. Neverthless, sometimes even small bedrooms can get away with large beside tables although recomdeation is to go for a shorter perhaps two drawer slick bedside table.  Despite of the size, we have beside tables which comes in same style so there isn't any compromise there.

Although called as bedside tables, they can be placed as commode in corridor or hallway or even in large bathrooms. So, if your bedroom is small but there is a plenty of space in hallway then bedside tables becomes a daystand there. During buying and selection process it is essential to know in hand the sort of storage you are planning for your bedside tables and perhaps making a list would be a good idea. That way you can actully choose betwen number of drawers, shape and size of your bedside table. So if you are hiding away winter cloths then you require larger, wider drawers whilst to store just smaller items such as books or jewellery then cerainly multiple but small drawers can segmentise storage very well.
